换个角度看臭氧

在上一期的微信文章里,我们提到了对于夏季臭氧的忧虑,也提到了臭氧会影响人体的健康。

除此之外,我们还谈到了某些采用静电技术的空气净化设备,在空气净化的同时,会产生一种对人体有害的物质——臭氧。

这周,我们将和大家详细聊聊有关臭氧的知识,以及其他会产生臭氧的空气净化技术。

In our last broadcast, we raised concerns about Ozone during the summer time. We discussed its effects on people’s health. In addition, we talked about electric air filters producing Ozone as a by-product. This week, we will elaborate more on Ozone and other air filter technologies that create Ozone.

臭氧的背景信息


臭氧一旦形成,它就会与有机、无机物(如甲醛、异味及细菌等)产生氧化反应,并随着时间而消散。

因为臭氧具有不稳定性,在自然条件下,会分解成氧气,所以一旦周围有其他物质,它会迅速与其发生反应,进行分解。

Once Ozone is created, it will dissipate over time under a process called oxidation reaction with organic and inorganic substance (like Formaldehyde, odor and bacteria). Basically, it will dissolve into oxygen naturally by itself over time or dissolve much faster when there are other substances located nearby that it reacts with. This is why Ozone is a used in multiple applications to eliminate indoor pollutants, like Formaldehyde, mold and bacteria. However, Ozone is harmful until it completely dissolves.

Last week, we mentioned about electronic air filters. As a reminder, the electronic air filters utilize emission technology that produces Ozone as a by-product. These filters treat airborne particles like PM2.5.

However, there are other indoor pollutants that require other technologies to treat. For example, Formaldehyde and Benzene are 2 prominent pollutants found in many households. To neutralize these pollutants, the air filter you use must employ another emission technology called Photocatalytic Oxidation. Photocatalytic Oxidation is a process that neutralizes toxic gases, like Formaldehyde, by converting them into safe compounds.

In this technology, Ultraviolet Light (UV) rays are used to create the process. Like electronic air filter technology, this technology will produce Ozone as a by-product as well. In general, any emission technology used in air filter will produce Ozone.

In summary, when you buy an air filter, look for these emission technologies: Photocatalytic Oxidation or Photocatalyst, Ultra Violet (UV) Light and Electric / Ion air filters. Know that if your device employs any of these technologies it will produce some level of Ozone as a by-product.

If you are concerned about Ozone exposure, you may want to avoid using these technologies.
